Once again, Fargo Systems will be exhibiting at the Logistics Link exhibition this year which is being held on the 6th and 7th of February at Sandown Park in Surrey.
Fargo Systems have just released version 2.9 of their TOPS transport management system and will be showcasing it’s latest features at the Logistics Link South exhibition at Sandown Park on 6th-7th February.
Recognising the growing importance of rail services to both the container and the general distribution sectors, the latest version incorporates all of the functionality required to manage an inter-modal supply chain or distribution network.
"We are seeing an increasing number of our customers looking to rail as a reliable and cost effective alternative to long-haul road movements", comments Kevin Terrill, Development Director at Fargo Systems. "In order to support an inter-modal operation, the transport planner needs to easily be able to swap freight from one transport mode to another and indeed use a combination of modes with different suppliers or in-house resources for the same cargo."
He adds, "Several of our customers both here in the UK and on mainland Europe use the rail as the main method of ‘trunking’ cargo large distances before reverting to road for the ‘final mile’. Looking beyond this, and particularly in the container transport market, we expect inland water and short-sea feeder services to be further developed."
For the rail service customer, TOPS combines the concepts of either spot-rates or contracted or dedicated capacity resources, resulting in a complete understanding of rail utilisation patterns and efficiency savings. Costs and revenue are associated down to each individual consignment movement level allowing for comprehensive analysis. For the rail service operator, functionality is extended further to cater for individual wagon and container planning, including as expected, capacity planning from both a TEU and weight perspective. Train timetables are established in advance with the operator being able to see at a glance the available capacity remaining which in turn defines service levels and costs for subsequent workloads.
Further enhancements are expected early in 2007 to include service and cost comparisons and the automatic assignment of freight to rail based on these and other factors including weight and order priority.

Fargo Systems have strengthened their senior management team with the appointment of Colin Potter to the role of Business Development Manager. Colin previously worked for many years with Hutchison Ports at the Port of Felixstowe where he held senior positions in both IT and Port Operations management. While later working for MCP plc, he was most notably involved in the specification and development of the new port community system 'Destin8' which is being implemented later this year as the successor to 'FCPS'. More recently he has been working as a consultant in the field of logistics optimisation and transport planning. "We are delighted that Colin approached us and came on board" commented Andrew Miller, Fargo Systems' Sales Director. He added, "these are exciting times and we believe his wealth of experience in container logistics systems combined with his energy and enthusiasm for our TOPS container transport management system will be a great asset to the company". Colin joins Fargo Systems at a time when their order book has never been fuller. No less than four new high profile customers in the intermodal market have been added in the past month with details to be announced shortly.
Recently returned from the Logistics Link show at Sandown Park, our sales team have plenty to keep them busy in the next few months. The stand was consistently busy through the two days and we were introduced to a number of top-level industry contacts. We also took the opportunity of inviting and welcoming lots of our existing customers to the stand and it was good to catch up with those that came. We ran a balloon competition, the results of which are still not known but we have so far received balloons back from as far afield as Faversham and Canterbury in Kent.
Once again, Fargo Systems will be exhibiting at the Logistics Link exhibition this year which is being held on the 7th and 8th of February at Sandown Park in Surrey.
We look forward to meeting up with existing customers and friends together with using the opportunity to showcase some of the new features in the latest version of TOPS.
The latest release of the TOPS transport and logistics solution includes a fully integrated and highly customisable fleet management module including a graphical appointments planning board.
